Project overview:
The Ionian Islands Virtual World is an innovative digital initiative developed by undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Department of Informatics at the Ionian University (Corfu, Greece).
Launched in 2011, this project was developed by undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Department of Informatics at the Ionian University, with partial funding from European and National Greek Funds (ESPA 2007-2013).
Originally designed for the touristic promotion of the Ionian Islands, the platform has evolved into a digital space for the cultural promotion of the region’s unique identity. Through this virtual world, visitors can interactively explore:
Unique Historical Buildings: Digital reconstructions of significant architectural landmarks 1.2.2.
Natural Environment: Picturesque beaches, romantic sunsets, and the diverse ecosystems of the islands 1.3.1.
Local Heritage: A platform that highlights the life and traditions of the people of the Ionian Islands 1.4.1.
The project represents an innovative collaboration between the Prefecture of the Ionian Islands and the University, utilizing virtual reality to preserve and showcase the Ionian cultural and environmental wealth to a global audience
