Prof. Georgios Papaioannou’s research focuses on museology, digital cultural heritage, museum archaeology, heritage management, and the application of data science, Big Data, and AI in museums and GLAM institutions, with a particular emphasis on the Mediterranean and the Arab world.
He is Professor of Museology and Digital Cultural Heritage and Director of the Museology Research Laboratory at the Ionian University, Greece. He has taught at universities in Europe, the USA, Australia, and the Arab world for more than three decades. His work bridges archaeology, heritage studies, and advanced digital technologies.
He is the founder of the International Conferences on Museum Big Data (since 2019) and has directed numerous internationally funded research projects. He has also founded and organized museums and exhibitions worldwide, including the Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth (Dead Sea, Jordan). Prof. Papaioannou has over 300 publications and invited lectures on archaeology, heritage, and digital heritage topics and is an active member of international heritage organizations, including EUROPEANA, the European Museum Academy, and ICOM.
