Stelios Lekakis’ research focuses on cultural heritage studies, museology, historical archaeology, the commons, and cultural informatics, with particular emphasis on participatory heritage management, landscape heritage, and the political economy of culture.
Stelios Lekakis studied Classical Archaeology and Heritage Management at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and University College London. He has worked as a field archaeologist and at the Greek Ministry of Culture, serving in the Acropolis Restoration Service and the Directorate for the Management of the National Archive of Monuments. He later joined the Centre for Landscape at Newcastle University as a Principal Research Associate, where he focused on landscape heritage.
He has taught cultural heritage management and political economy at the Hellenic Open University and the Open University of Cyprus. As a cultural heritage consultant, he collaborates with NGOs and academic institutions on participatory management and cultural informatics projects. He is a founding member of MONUMENTA and the creative director of Mazomos Landscape and Heritage Consultants. His publications explore islandscapes, heritage politics, archaeology, and the commons in heritage management. In his spare time, he writes for the theatre and seeks out the scattered, small secrets of existence.

Current projects: Spice Routes research project in the Banda Islands, Maluku, Indonesia (2024–2025). GLAMMONS – Resilient, sustainable and participatory practices: Towards the GLAMs of the commons (Horizon Europe, 2022–2025., Devastation, dislocation and (re-)settlement. Breaking/replacing the people–place connection in landscape (AHRC–DFG, 2021–2024).
