Project overview:
The exhibition explored the rich industrial heritage of Chalkis, highlighting the city’s transition from a production hub to its modern identity. It focused on the architectural significance of factory buildings, the diversity of locally manufactured products, and, most importantly, the human stories of the laborers and entrepreneurs who fueled the city’s economy.
Key Details:
Venue: Hosted at the Port Authority of Euboea (OLNE), located in the historic “Votrys” winery factory—a landmark of the city’s industrial past.
Organized by: The Hellenic Society for Near Eastern Studies (HSNES).
Curation: The museological design and coordination were led by Professor Georgios Papaioannou.
Impact:
By utilizing archival material, photographs, and industrial artifacts, the exhibition served as a collective memory project. It successfully reconnected the local community with its industrial roots and sparked a dialogue on the preservation and re-use of industrial heritage in Greece.
