FLUSEUM: Progress and Current Activities

Since its official commencement on 2 June 2025, the FLUSEUM research project has progressed in accordance with its approved work plan and objectives. Significant progress has been achieved across the project’s research, methodological, training, management, dissemination and communication activities.

Research and methodological development
During the reporting period, the project established its theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundations through a systematic review of relevant international and Greek literature. The research focuses on museum visitor experience and behaviour, visitor flow, spatial and architectural factors, personalized cultural experiences, and the use of Big Data to understand visitor behaviour and engagement.
Building on this framework, the project developed questionnaires, pilot research instruments and procedures for data collection and analysis. The tools were designed for the two study sites in Corfu: the Archaeological Site of Mon Repos and the Museum of Asian Art of Corfu.
The research instruments were subsequently pilot-tested in both study environments. The pilot research enabled the collection and preliminary processing of data concerning visitor experience, behaviour, engagement and reactions, while also providing input for the refinement of the methodology ahead of the main empirical research phase.

Researcher training and scientific collaboration
An educational and training programme was implemented through online and on-site meetings involving doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from related and interdisciplinary fields. The activities supported knowledge exchange and familiarization with the FLUSEUM theoretical framework, research methodology, research tools and procedures.
At the same time, the project has advanced with the collection and processing of research data, the development and application of methodological tools, and the scientific documentation and exploitation of emerging results.

Scientific dissemination and publications
Scientific dissemination has been an important part of the project’s activities. Four scientific papers have been prepared, submitted and/or accepted during the reporting period.
Two papers have been accepted and are under publication in conference proceedings:

• “Creative and critical multiliteracy in educational training. The Fluseum research project as a model for museum and museum-educational research” by Papaioannou, Micheli, Andrianou and Sfyridou.
• “The Fluseum research project and the reconstruction of museum flow: conceptual mechanism for adapted cultural learning” by Micheli and Papaioannou.

In addition:

• “Museum visitor studies through Big Data: Methodological insights from the ‘FLUSEUM’ project” by Micheli and Sfyridou has been submitted to the 4th International Conference on Museum Big Data.
• “Flow, Data, and Power: Reimagining Museum Heritage through Visitor Movement and Big Data” by Papaioannou and Micheli has been accepted for presentation at the 8th Biennial Conference of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies.

Academic visibility and communication
The FLUSEUM project was presented through a poster at the Ionian University Researcher’s Day on 17 March 2026, providing an opportunity to present its research objectives and progress to the academic and research community. Project-related research has also been disseminated through participation in national and international scientific conferences and events.
Preparatory work has commenced for the development of the FLUSEUM project website, which will present the project’s objectives, implementation activities, research outputs, scientific participation and results. In parallel, work has begun on the preparation of a collective scientific volume, with writing, editing and completion planned for the next reporting period.

Project management and next steps
Project management and coordination activities have continued throughout the implementation period, supporting the scientific, administrative and organisational progress of FLUSEUM, including the monitoring of activities, deliverables and work packages.
Overall, the project has progressed from the establishment of its theoretical and methodological framework to pilot research, research data collection and processing, researcher training, scientific documentation and the dissemination of emerging results.
During the forthcoming implementation period, FLUSEUM will focus on completing ongoing research activities and deliverables, further processing and analysing the collected data, exploiting the emerging results, and continuing its scientific dissemination, communication and publicity activities.
