New Publication by Dr Anna Micheli: Introduction to Museographic Semiotics
The Museology Research Laboratory of Ionian University is pleased to present the new publication by Dr Anna Micheli, Postdoctoral Researcher in the HFRI-funded FLUSEUM research project, entitled Introduction to Museographic Semiotics: From the Display Case to the Symbol and the Exhibit.
The book approaches the museum exhibition not simply as a space for displaying objects, but as a complex and multi-semiotic field of communication. Drawing on the dialogue between museography and semiotic theory, it explores how museum objects are transformed into exhibits and acquire meaning through spatial organisation, materiality, narrative and the visitor’s experience.
Particular attention is given to the museum exhibit as a communicative and interpretive element, as well as to the relationship between the exhibit and its audience. Visitors are approached not as passive recipients of information, but as active participants in the production and interpretation of meaning within the museum space.
The publication examines a range of issues relevant to contemporary exhibition practice, including the multimodality of exhibition media, sensory and spatial strategies, the social and cultural dimensions of museum information, and the integration of digital and experiential approaches. It also addresses questions of polyphony, participation and accessibility in contemporary museum exhibitions.
Alongside its theoretical discussion, the book provides methodological tools, practical examples and exercises for the application of semiotic analysis to exhibition spaces. In this way, it connects theoretical approaches to the practical analysis and design of museum exhibitions.
The publication contributes to ongoing discussions on museography and museum communication, highlighting the museum exhibition as an active space for the production of meaning, memory and experience.
